obama returns to the bay area next month. the white house says the president will travel to northern california april 3rd and 4th for fundraisers for democratic congressional candidates. events are planned in san francisco and silicon valley. the president will campaign to help fellow democrats try to regain control of the house in the 2014 midterm elections. >>> new report reveals state furloughs designed to save california money could actually be more expensive. the furloughs were intended to save about $5 billion between february 2009 and july of this year. but many state employees are taking less vacation days because of those mandated furrows. budget advisors for the legislature are calculating that california will end up paying an extra $1 billion to employees when they either retire or quit because of vacation time that was never used. >>> muni will reduce service later this month. a dozen lives will be reduced during commute hours from march 25th to march 29th. muni is anticipating fewer riders because san francisco state university has spring break that week. the agency hope

president obama's separate meetings with senate republicans and house democrats. the talks covered everything from gun violence and immigration to trade policy and climate change. they discussed the keystone pipeline, job creation, federal regulation and the middle east peace process. but like usual, the biggest issues of all, entitlements and taxes and whether the two sides could find common ground to reach a grand bargain on the budget. top republicans liked what they heard, including the president's willingness to address entitlement reform. the president's central point, unless they give him cover on revenue, he's not going to have much luck to convince his own party to tackle programs like medicare. democrats, nervous that the white house would take a bad deal. he assured them, he's not charlie brown with a football. only to see the republicans pull the ball like lucy, away, at the last second. john boehner is pushing back at conservative members who are calling to restrict money from the president's health care law as part of legislation to fund the government. >> i believe t

the party leadership from rahm emanual, who is heading the house democratic campaign committee. chuck schumer, and barack obama as a presidential candidate, they didn't talk about it. so the base still held those beliefs strongly. but they, the sort of faces of the party just stopped talking about it. to the extend they talked about it. they said i know there's a lot of strong passions on this issue, i have a certain view, but i don't think that view should necessarily go for everyone in the country. i think that's where the gay marriage issue is heading for republicans. there is always going to be a group and not insignificant group of republicans who simply do not like it and feel very passionately about it. but my guess is that it's going to fade, kelly pointed out it's a generational issue. it's going to fade from sort of the active political dialogue that we won't talk about it as much. not that people won't still hold those beliefs, but that the politicians won't talk about them. >> of course, chris cillizza and kelly, we saw dick cheney and his personal situation. family matter

during president obama's meetings yesterday with senate republicans and house democrats. the talks reportedly covered everything from gun violence and immigration and trade policy and climate change and discussed the keystone pipeline and job creation and federal regulations. even the middle east peace process. but like usual, the biggest issues involved entitlements and taxes and whether the two sides could find enough common ground to reach some sort of grand bargain on the budget. a number of top republicans said they liked what they heard, particularly on the president's willingness to address entitlement reform. at the same time, one republican acknowledged the president's central point that unless they give him cover on revenue, he's not going to have much left convincing his own party tackling programs like medicare. >> that is where we are, david, right now. the president understandably needs cover before he goes to house democrats and say i'm going to do this with cpi and adjust medicare benefits down the road. republicans the same way. saying this is the position i'd be i
